The first female Briton to circumnavigate the globe by bike By Paul N. Blezard Elspeth Beard is one of a select band of bold women to pilot a motorcycle around the world, and she was the first Englishwoman to do so. She achieved this feat a quarter of a century ago (1982-‘84. ed), in the days before SatNav and GPS, internet and email, mobile phones and iPODs and she did it mostly alone. The bike she chose for the trip was a second-hand 1974 R60/6 flat twin for which she paid £900 ($1800) in 1980, a substantial sum, at the time, especially for a machine that already had 30,000 miles on the clock!
